Injury: Fracture of T-5/6 vertebrae
Cause: Mountain bike accident
Place: Toronto, Canada
Date: October 5, 2005
During an October 2005 ride on a mountain bicycle, Derek lost his balance on a wooden bridge and plunged to the ground below. The fall fractured his T5 & 6 vertebrae and left him paraplegic. The ensuing five months of therapy at a local Toronto, Canada, rehabilitation facility were all the more difficult because Derek's wife, Alanna, had given birth to their son only two months prior to his accident.
Today, Derek continues to work on expanding his juice business, Pucker Up, and is adapting to life in a wheelchair.
SCORE was pleased to support Derek's rehabilitation with a grant for a hand-cycle.
