Cause: Snowboarding accident
Place: Tahoe, CA
Date: January 19, 2003
While snowboarding at Sierra Nevada Ski Resort in Tahoe, Jess over-rotated during a jump and landed on her back. The impact of the landing fractured the T11 and 12 vertebrae in her back, leaving her paraplegic.
Before the accident, Jessica was a noted high school athlete, participating in pole vault, gymnastics and wakeboarding, among many activities. She has embraced her new life circumstances by adopting several new sports, including wheelchair basketball. In the winter of 2004, Jessica was a member the J.V. Bay Cruisers wheelchair basketball team which captured its second consecutive national championship. She intends to attend college in the fall of 2004.
