Injury: Fracture of C-6 vertebrae
Cause: Mountain bike accident
Luis was riding his mountain bike in January 2003 when it slipped on a slick area and he was thrown over the handlebars. The fall fractured his C-6 vertebrae and left him with limited arm and hand control.
Luis' economic circumstances have made it difficult for his family to hire outside caregivers or to renovate his home to make it accessible. In particular, he could not access the bathroom, and thus was resigned to being taken outside where a garden hose would serve as a shower.
SCORE is providing grant funds to renovate Luis' bathroom, and our Northern California Board of Advisors members are working closely with Luis to explore education and employment options.
